Chaser/leader style vs side by side

Have you ever wonder why most of the battles in First Stage are all started side by side and the winner is decided in one round, whereas starting with battles such as the one with Impact Blue they start doing it with the... chaser-leader or sudden death style? Some of us have wondered about that for years, and there were a few logical reasons that we came up with.

Chaser/leader style is more realistic. In real life, they don't start like that side by side unless they are doing a drag race. They settle for the win in chaser/leader fashion and sometimes even with sudden death style.

It is more flexible and the author can tweak the result mid race if he comes up with something new. Remember, the races are drawn by hand and they get released very slowly. Sometimes a battle can take up to several months to draw. So if the author decides the race needs another round, he can simply make the characters stick to each other and go into a second round.

And the last explanation is kind of obvious. They only use chaser/leader style when the road is relatively narrow. Is that really true? What do you think? Why do you think they tend to use chaser/leader to settle for the win much more often towards later stages (i.e. Project.D expedition)?

Initial D Reunion Meet 2

We are three days away from the Initial D Reunion Meet 2. This is the last reminder that we will be holding the event at Lafayette Reservoir on 2013.7.27. If you have been following this page, you probably know that a new movie and a "Final Stage" of Initial D is planned. Those information will come out on the 26th. The last issue of Initial D manga is coming out on the 2013.7.29 and that the last volume of the manga Vol.47 is coming out on the 2013.8.6. So there are a lot of things going on in the coming days. We are sad that Initial D will come to an end soon, but very excited about all the happenings at the same time. If you love Initial D, come out and join us for a send-off celebration of Initial D.

How should Initial D end?

It all started when Keisuke and Takumi met on the mountain pass of Akina one night. They were destined to be rival for life in the beginning. Yet, in a subtle sense they admire each other as they grow. Keisuke's life-long... goal after he met Takumi is to surpass Takumi one day. Takumi, on the other hand, just wants to be faster than the fastest.

Keisuke's skill has grown exponentially during the Project.D expedition. But so is Takumi. Like Ryousuke said, the subtle relationship between the double ace is very beneficial to themselves.

Everyone is looking forward for a so-called "rematch" between Keisuke and Takumi since First Stage. Unfortunately, we don't see that happening. The author Shigeno sort of sets himself up for that one. If they do race each other and if there is a conclusion, either result will destroy the work that the author has build up for both characters thus far. If Takumi wins (which is the more likely scenario by the way), then all the hard work that Keisuke has done from Fourth Stage through Fifth Stage means nothing. Takumi is still untouchable no matter how hard Keisuke tries. Now, if Keisuke wins, then it sort of takes away the main protagonist's halo effect. While Keisuke is an important character in the story, Takumi is still the main protagonist no matter what.

To have Takumi lose to the very first opponent in the series means the whole story is now based on Keisuke's growth instead. It would show that Keisuke finally is able to beat Takumi.

Either way, the fans won't be satisfied. That's why we think having a rematch is highly unlikely. But it's always fun to speculate of course.

New Initial D The Movie and Final Stage

BREAKING NEWS!!! avex just announced minutes ago that a new theatrical version of Initial D will be released in the summer of 2014. More details will be released in the... ヤングマガジン大アート原画展2013 "Young Magazine Original Art Exhibition 2013" that's being held in 渋谷ヒカリエ9階 (Shibuya Hikarie 9th Floor) from July 26 to July 29.

Trailer, promo videos and images will be released on those dates. Keep your eyes peeled for more breaking news!!! The movie is tentatively being called "Final Stage" It will continue where Fifth Stage left off. Following the protagonist Takumi Fujiwara and his last Kanagawa race against Sidewinder's Shinji Inui, we will see the conclusion of this downhill battle.

Kodansha has recently announced that on July 29th, 2013, they will publish the last issue of Initial D manga, ending the 18 years long running series in their publications. Starting in 1995, the popular comics has sold over 48 million copies over a span of almost two decades.

Latest Manga Development "Disbanding Ceremony"

The cover for the last book volume of Initial D manga was released today! The cover features none... other than Takumi's hatchback vs Shinji's notchback with Takumi in front. Volume 47 is slated to be released on August 6th, 2013 for ¥580 ($5.79) You may pre-order it now in the links below.

This last volume focus on the downhill race between Takumi and Shinji and the result of the race will be revealed near the end of the book, along with the meaning of D. This book is expected to sell really well considering that it is the last volume in the series. Even if you don't understand Japanese, if you have some spare money, we encourage you to get a copy yourself just because of its legendary status.

Vol.718 (the second to last chapter in the book) was also released today on the forums. We'll give a summary here. The disbanding party is being held near 赤城 大沼 (Lake Onuma, Akagi) Takumi shows up in the Impreza. He talked with Matsumoto briefly. Takumi described how there was no way to push the 86 anymore but at the critical moment, the 86 revved higher than the possible limit. It was like the car has a mind of its own.

Matsumoto offered to repair the 86 and search for a new engine for Takumi but he declined... The 86 will be scrapped... So it really is the end. Without the 86, the series just can't go on any more.

Keisuke challenges Takumi for a race to see who's faster, but he's a bit drunk from all the alcoholic beverages. Takumi said he doesn't have the 86 anymore and using the Impreza would be unfair to Keisuke. Keisuke got mad and joked about killing Takumi. Basically, this is a relaxing chapter that everyone was looking forward to. It's finally a change of pace from all the racing. We just wish it'd go on a little longer. Initial D manga to end on 2013.7.29

Today we received a very saddening news. The last chapter (Vol.719) of the Initial D manga will be published on Young Magazine YM35 on July 29th, 2013.

This is the end of line. The 18 years long running racing series that... we came to know as Initial D will end in about 10 days. This news was first reported by Anime News Network. It is confirmed to be legitimate as the author Shigeno has been hinting that the series is nearing the end for awhile now.

The very first manga chapter was published on Young Magazine Weekly on November 6th, 1995. It has been continuously being published on the magazine for almost two decades. We are still trying to cope with this news, it's very hard for Initial D fans around the world to accept it.

The implication of the manga ending is huge. It means even if we do get a OVA some time down the road, it might not be completely canon because all we have is the race between Takumi vs Shinji. It won't be enough to cover a 2-hour movie. It most likely will have a lot of flashbacks and some fillers created just for the anime.

As some of you know, the final book volume of the manga Vol.47 will be released on August 6th, 2013——"8-6 Day" Do you still remember the day when we got the news that Fifth Stage was confirmed? It was August 6th, 2012. They have planned this all along. (sigh)

Perfect Choice TV, the HD channel that broadcasted Fifth Stage, will start to air Initial D in its entirety from First Stage all the way to Fifth Stage starting August 2nd, 2013 as a way to pay tribute and remember Initial D.

Take some time to take this one in, I am still doing that right now. It really makes me feel like crying.

Initial D 聖地巡礼 Hakone Tour

The fun2drive Owners' Club, a Japanese car rental company located in Hakone Kanagawa, is a platform built on the belief... of「車好きは、クルマ遊びをあきらめない」"Automotive fans will never give up playing with cars" Hence the name fun2drive. From the month of July to September, they will be gathering Initial D fans and car enthusiasts alike to participate in their 頭文字D聖地巡礼ツアー箱根編 "Initial D Seichi Junrei Hakone Edition"

聖地巡礼 (Seichi Junrei) is very popular in Japan, especially in the anime culture. It literally means pilgrimage to sacred places. That's when fans visit the locations depicted in their favorite anime series. It's no exception with Initial D. Long time followers of this page, you all know that most of the locations shown in Initial D Fifth Stage are all based on real life locations.

fun2drive is taking the opportunity to let die-hard Initial D fans rent cars from Initial D and drive on the mountain roads shown in Fifth Stage. What an idea!! You get to choose cars like the AE86, FD, NSX, R32, R35, S2000, Miata... etc from the show. The tour will start in 箱根町仙石原 (Sengokuhara Hakone) and it'll pass major attraction points like Nagao touge, Hakone Lake, Tsubaki Line, TOYO TIRES (Hakone) Turnpike, Nanamagari Pass and back to the starting point. The whole tour will be guided by a leading car or you may choose to have tour guide accompany you in the passenger seat. There are two tours daily. Real Life Gutter Run?

It's bound to happen. REVOLT-IS, a group that's dedicated to Japanese car culture and information, did a demonstration of 溝落とし "gutter run" at none other than the famous Mt. Haruna... (Akina) couple days ago.

It must be an impressive sight to see in person, especially if you are a die-hard Initial D fans. But we don't recommend everyone to go out to try that, you'll damage your car's chassis severely if you don't know how deep the gutter is in advanced.

What kind of crazy stunts have you done with your car(s)? (laugh)
