Fourth Stage vs Fifth Stage

There were a few flashbacks in Initial D Fifth Stage. One of them was the "oil incident" from Fourth Stage. We did a quick comparison between that scene in Fourth Stage Ep.15 and the flashback in Fifth Stage Ep.13 to... show you the difference in art style of the two stages. Enjoy!

Fifth Stage obviously look brighter and the background seem a little unreal with that vibrant colors, whereas Fourth Stage seems to be more true to life. What do you think? Which style do you like more?

Initial D Anthropomorphic Plan

It's not uncommon for some people to name their cars. After all, it's like a friend to you and you bond with the cars. Naturally, guys like to give their cars female names because it's like their babies. So what if... your car is a girl, how would it look like in human form?

Led by 珠鈴菜 (Suzuna), a couple Japanese Initial D fans set out to test the theory. They dress themselves up as the cars from Initial D! Usually people cosplay as the characters from an anime, but they want to do it differently. They call this 頭文字D 擬人化計画 "Initial D Anthropomorphic Plan." We think the costumes look rather awesome, especially Keisuke's FD with all the gauges as the belt.

We know, this is going to change the way you see the cars in Initial D, forever. You are welcome. (laugh)

Initial D Journey: Mt. Usui (Video)

Few days ago, we posted about a popular Japanese Initial D fansite named JEFの港 traveling to Mt. Usui and reenact scenes between Takumi's AE86 vs Impact Blue (Mako & Sayuki)'s Sil80 from Initial D. The... video footage is finally out!!!

All we can say is, the fans are completely capable of producing a Initial D live action movie much better than the one they made in 2005. I guess it comes down to resources. Making a movie is not easy. It takes months of planning, coordination, and you guessed it, money.

Until someone really passionate about remaking the live action movie steps up, we can appreciate earnest efforts like this from the fellow fans. Be sure to check out the pictures in the links below.

AE86's fate foreshadowed in Fourth Stage

Before Bunta bought the Impreza, he said to Takumi that he's a grown adult, sharing the 86 half-half is inconvenient. "Of course, that's assuming the car is still running next year." At that time, the fans have... no idea what Bunta meant. Even Takumi was puzzled. Takumi said he loves the 86 so much that he will keep driving it forever... (Tsk tsk, Takumi...)

It has been almost a decade since Initial D Fourth Stage Episode 10 first aired. All I can say is, that's some serious foreshadowing by Shigeno-san. >>This needs to be discussed.<<

AE86 vs Sil80 (Real Life vs Anime)

We always believe the Initial D fans from Japan are the luckiest. They have the native advantages of having the physical and geographical background presented in Initial D, making it possible to reenact scenes exactly from the... show if you have enough resources.

Take this picture for example, JEFの港 is a fansite dedicated to all things Japanese, with a focus on replicating scenes and discovering details from Initial D (Sort of like what we do here at Initial D World, except we are stateside.) It has been the inspiration for many Initial D fans all these years. Few days ago, they went out to Mt. Usui and reenacted the start-up scene from Initial D First Stage Episode 17 when Takumi chose to chase for the first round against Impact Blue's Mako & Sayuki.

It sure brings back some fond memories, doesn't it? (smile)

Takumi is such a cheapskate!

Let's rewind to Initial D First Stage Episode 22. Itsuki and Iketani were worried and believed Takumi might be suffering from "lovesickness" before the big race with Ryousuke. In an attempt to cheer Takumi up,... Itsuki devise a plan to get Takumi to Mt. Myogi to watch the battle between REDSUNS and the NightKids. (And ultimately got themselves into a downhill rain battle with Kenta's orange S14...)

Now that we have our mind refreshed on those scenes. What I want to bring everyone's attention to today is how Takumi tried to avoid highways when driving to Myogi. Why did he do that? Well, because most highways in Japan aren't free to enter. We did some research and found some interesting details.

From 渋川市 (Shibukawa), where Takumi and Itsuki lived, to 妙義山 (Mt. Myogi) it is about 43 km (26.5 miles) if they take the regular road. However, it is 62 km (38.5 miles) if they take the tolled highway. Not only it is longer to take the highway than road, it also costs a whopping ¥1,750 ($17.57 USD) to use the highway for the section from Shibukawa Ikaho to Matsuida Myogi.

But was it really smart for Takumi to avoid the highway? Let's see here. You can drive up to 100 km/h on highways. However, you are limited to 40 km/h on regular road and then you need to stop for lights and traffic conditions might also play a factor on how fast you can drive.

According to NEXCO Central Japan, it would only take 38 minutes using the highway. Driving on the regular road on the other hand? Google says it will take 1 hour and 21 minutes. Boy, what a difference. (43 minutes to be precise) But for high school kids like Takumi and Itsuki, 1750 yen is really expensive. They probably can't afford it. Just look at Itsuki, he didn't even want to drive his 85 out, even though he's so proud to drive his 85 around. Japanese people also seem to be unwilling to drive long distance. So even though 20~30 miles seem like nothing to us stateside folks, it is like a road trip to them.

7Tune to host exclusive Initial D tours

Couple months ago, we reported about a Japanese car rental company fun2drive Owners' Club having a special program that let Initial D fans drive cars from the show on mountain passes featured in Initial D Fifth... Stage.

7tune is collaborating with fun2driveレンタカー・カーシェアリング to launch an exclusive "Initial Drive" tour beginning December 2013. This will be a pilot tour so to speak. It will be used to gauge how much interest there are for people from outside of Japan to participate. From what we know so far, international and local bookings of the tour will begin in October and the tour will last three consecutive days in December, just after the Tokyo Motorshow.

If you are planning to visit Japan in December, then this is definitely something to keep an eye out for. For many years, Initial D fans can only talk about or dream about driving in roads featured in Initial D. It literally is a dream to drive in one of these mountain pass with cars shown in Initial D. These tours are perfect opportunities for die-hard Initial D fans that want to get behind the wheel of cars they've always dreamed of driving——and to drive them hard on some of the most epic touge roads in the world up and around the lakes and mountains surrounding Mt. Fuji.

As Adam Zillin (owner of 7Tune) put it, this is about bringing the dreams to life. We here at Initial D World wholeheartedly agree. If only I could visit Japan in the near future, I can die happily. Of course, if the tours in December turn out to be a huge success, they will be doing this regularly. So share this news with people you know that will be visiting Japan around December. (smile)

Fanart Submission: Disbanding Party

It's fanart submission time again! This time we have a drawing submitted from someone that goes by the name 虎月 ("Tiger Moon") If you have read the last chapter for the manga, you know how... unfulfilled it felt. So some fans set out to draw more for the last chapter if the original author is not doing it.

This drawing is quite decent and we really love how vibrant the colors are. It feels like the end of Project.D was missing a scene like this. The tone of the original ending is very heavy and sad. So this is a change to a lighter mood. We hope you like it as much as we do. (smile)
